Crème and Punishment
Greetings home-slices,
This is it, the day we've all been waiting for: It's #OurMothersDay. But it's a good thing our Two Crusty Moms weren't on the scene, because Established dropped. the. ball. Our mothers would not have been pleased with today's white chocolate and strawberry cream pie. No self-respecting mom we know would be caught dead with this pie in her recipe book!
Shall we dig in? When we saw this week's preview promising strawberries and cream, we were delighted—nothing says springtime like a basket of sun-kissed strawberries and freshly whipped cream. But alas, our picnic has been rained out by the heavy hand of white chocolate and a disappointing lemon crust. This pie featured a LOT of cream, which is probably the best thing we can say about it. Strawberry slivers were sparingly sandwiched between a white chocolate crème and a fresh cream, missing a much needed textural contrast. We hate to say it, but Established was really grasping at strawberries.
In an exercise of democracy, let us be the voice of the people: white chocolate is terrible. The worst. Subpar. Poor. And we do not want it in our pie. The white chocolate crème changed the entire makeup of the pie; where we were anticipating light, fluffy, and dreamy, the white chocolate rendered it stodgy, heavy, and slightly off in flavor. We'd never say no to a chocolate-covered strawberry, but we'd also never expect it to be dipped in white chocolate.
But perhaps the most disappointing element, the final nail in this pie tin, was the sorry excuse for a crust. We don't know the details, but this crust clearly did not receive enough love in its youth, and has a grown up to a stale, motherless, failure. The texture made us sad! Somehow it was soggy on the bottom, and yet simultaneously impossible to tear. We are truly baffled.
At the end of #OurMothersDay, this pie made us miss our moms (and their baking) more than we already did. Here's to hoping Established is back on their game next week. Do it for the moms!
Stay sweet till next week,
Two Crusty Gals
