Apple of My Pie

Greetings home-slices,

After our Easter pie-atus, we are back and ready to rumble! But first, we would like to address the elephant in the room: we know how many of you await our Sunday posts with bated breath and have been let down by our persistent procrastination.

But no more! It is our summer resolution to bring our blog post to you piepin' hot, fresh out of the oven every Sunday evening (UK time for our international readers). We sealed this solemn covenant with a pinky promise, so can you bet your sweet bippies it's the real. deal.

Now that we've poached that elephant, let us return to our regularly-scheduled pie-gramming. This Sunday marked a joyous return to our Sunday-pie-with-friends tradition. We inducted a new Honorary Crusty Gal and welcomed the return of three more (two Honorary and one Real) who had been away, over slices of blackberry apple pie. Reunited and it tasted so good!

Let's cut the crust and talk pie. The weekly pie preview left us with a poisonous taste in our mouths after seeing the forbidden fruit (read: red delicious apples) that Established intended to bake into their pie. Any baker worth their sugar should know that red delicious are NOT baking apples! But we came with bottomless pits for stomachs and open minds. And Established came through.

The blackberry in this take on apple pie made for a visually-arresting slice. The upper crust was thiccly braided and shined with glaze, offering glimpses into the stained red interior. However, this thiccness proved too much and one of these Crusty Gals had to resort to breaking the crust with her hands after stabbing got her nowhere.

Inside, the blackberries were layered on top of a pile of paper-thin apple slices, so unfortunately, our critique of Established's apple-slicing technique still stands. The pie was refreshingly tart with the cream providing a necessary balance of both sweetness and texture.

For one of these Crusty Gals, this pie came as a welcome break from the Established's campaign of death by chocolate. It was almost everything she wanted in a pie. For the other Crusty Gal, this pie was nothing to write home about, but when you have a pie blog, that's exactly what you do.

The one benefit of waiting until Wednesday to write our pie blog? We can tell you what's in store for next week: something involving chocolate, almond, coffee, and caramel. And after a few weeks off, we are ready to sink our teeth back into some chocolate!

Stay sweet till next week,

Two Crusty Gals
