Brownie Points
Greetings home-slices,
Today's excellent pie is the perfect bookend to a weekend of culinary decadence for these Two Crusty Gals. Friday we gorged on Carling and Pringles before ending our evening with designer chicken specials (courtesy of Guccii Chip). Saturday, we embarked on a magnificent six-course meal where each food and wine pairing was more indulgent than the last. And then today, Established wooed us with a brownie-esque chocolate buttermilk custard pie accompanied by a zesty orange cream. Needless to say, we are very full and happy.
In a surprising twist, this week's pie was miles ahead of our expectations based on the instagram preview. Visions of chocolate and buttermilk left a sour taste of things to come, but boy, oh boy, were we mistaken.
It never would have occurred to us to bake a brownie into a pie crust, but we sure are glad that Established did. A warning to the viewers at home that a brownie pie isn't the most photogenic, but trust us when we say it's the inside that counts.
The crust was, yet again, the weakest link. We should say that One Crusty Gal is biased against Established's crust technique and generally finds their crust to be too thick along the back and paper thin along the bottom; this week was no exception. The Other Crusty Gal harbors no such feelings, but would like to lodge a complaint that her crust was deformed, which caused her slice to be significantly smaller than other servings. It has a become an unfortunate tradition for this Crusty Gal to be unable to finish her pie, and so it is the cruel irony of life that today, when she felt up to the task, the pie was lacking filling.
However, both Crusty Gals unanimously agree that the filling was stellar. It was moist, dense, and chocolatey out the wazoo. While we don't condone eating brownies with cutlery, the fork feel of this pie was exactly what you would expect should you desecrate a brownie in this manner.
The cream! The cream was great. The classic combo of chocolate and orange brought a springtime feel to this delightful pie. Brownie points for you, Established!
