Put the Lime in the Coconut (and that's an order!)
Greetings home-slices,
We are saddened to report that this week, Established did not, in fact, put the lime in the coconut. What they mixed all up was a beautifully-presented pie which we suspect was dubiously branded as key lime.
While we have no hard evidence to unmask this mask-querade, it is now time to reveal a little something about ourselves, dear reader. These Two Crusty Gals hail from the United States: birthplace of key lime pie. Our secret is out, and we are onto Established like the lime zest on this week's coconut cream.
The pie's name was key. Established called it "Key Lime Pie with Coconut Cream," immediately raising our American expectations to heights they could not reach. Had it been marketed as something else, we would not have judged it so harshly.
Here's our bite-by-bite commentary: as you can see, the layers were clearly defined and the color difference was quite impressive. But in spite of the apparent symmetry, the flavors were disproportionately represented.
As for the filling, the bright color suggested a lime-y punch that was nonetheless absent. The filling was also quite dense compared to the pillowy creaminess we are accustomed to.
Lastly, the crust was so. much. It was good, don't get us wrong, especially for a take on a graham cracker crust in a country that doesn't sell graham crackers, but this is one of those times where less is more. Despite looking dense, the crust offered a light, buttery crunch. It would have paired much better with a traditional key lime pie filling.
Ultimately, the crust proved too much for one of these Crusty Gals. It's always a sad day to leave a fallen crust behind. (To be fair, the other Crusty Gal had no problem horkin' down every last crumb).
In an ironic twist, the piece of pie we were hand-delivering to an honorary Crusty Gal went plummeting cream-first in transit - quite literally falling flat.
Any way you slice it, this pie did not deliver on its promises. It had its day in the limelight, but it shone for the wrong audience.
Stay sweet till next week,
Two Crusty Gals
