Tastes Like Summer
Greetings home-slices,
It's been a quiet week here at Crusty Headquarters™with one Crusty Gal traveling around Ireland and Scotland while the Other Crusty Gal faces the grim reality of a swiftly-approaching dissertation deadline. But even though July signals the absolute, final, we-really-mean-it-this-time end of procrastination, these two Crusty Gals have been spending plenty of time basking in the Belfast sun (who wouldda thunk it?) and enjoying the fruits of summer.
All of the picnics in the park and beautiful summer sunsets of the last few weeks clearly served as the inspiration for this week's strawberry balsamic pie. After all, what says summer more than a forkful of berries lovingly wrapped in golden crust and smothered with fresh cream?
Visually, this pie said summer like no other. A thick, thick crust capped off a jam-like strawberry filling that oozed onto the plate. The pillows of cream (a steep buy at an additional 30p!!) offered a shocking color contrast against the rich berry red.
While Established earns points for sticking to the season (certainly better than last week's pecan pie), One Crusty Gal and her Honorary Crusty Companion were unable to pick up any hint of the advertised balsamic notes. This was as a big of a let-down as discovering that you accidentally left your sunscreen at home. So, like tourists facing their red-faced fates, we resigned ourselves to eating one heck of a tart pie. The cream lent a helping hand in cutting through the acidity, but without the promised richness of a nice balsamic reduction, it was simply too sour.
But in a way, this pie is still the perfect metaphor for summer - warm and gone too soon.
Stay sweet till next week,
